Signups are now open for the September 23 issue, which is our annual special issue dedicated to showing off the works of the visual artists in the community.

The theme for this issue is DISTANT SHORES: far-off places and the fun of going (or not going) there.

Artists are of course welcome to both write and draw their own contributions. However, authors may volunteer to generate ideas, hack out dialogue, write/polish final scripts, and/or whatever else might be necessary in the story-creating process. If you’re a writer interested in a collaboration, leave a comment here detailing what things you’d be interested in doing, from spot-checking someone else’s written work to cutting an entire script from whole cloth. If you’re an artist looking for someone to whip up the text for you, look no further!

Usually SSBB signups happen a little under two months in advance of the issue; this one’s got double that lead time. But comics take a long time, so there’s a lot to be said for a head start.

Signal-boosting is much appreciated in general, but especially here! I’m not an artist at all (as anyone who’s ever played DrawSomething with me knows), and I’m far better at rallying the troops when the troops have keyboards instead of tablets.

That thing with the butterfly that didn’t happen last year? WILL HAPPEN THIS YEAR EVEN IF IT’S OVER MY DEAD BODY.

Deutsche Telekom Dumps Net Neutrality; Will Limit Bandwidth For Competing Video & Voice Products

For those of you who have been wondering about the German Deutsche Telekom posts, here’s a link to an English article on the matter. TL;DR: German internet provider Deutsche Telekom is setting up limits to its internet flats and, once customers have used up a certain amount of traffic, will throttle the speed of their connection down to the worst of dial-up days. No streaming, be it via youtube or a paid prescription, no Skype or other voice over IP - unless you are paying extra for Telekom’s own services, like their internet television platform, those are exempt. Who needs web neutrality when you can make money?

Petition for the Untied States to make paid maternity mandatory.

The United States is the only developed country in the world without paid maternity leave. Forcing families to choose between going without a salary and having a baby is unethical. Forcing mothers to give up caring for their newborns because they are going broke is not acceptable.
